I serve as a special education teacher at a public elementary school in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago. The majority of the students at my school are Latinx, and many are English Learners. My job is to provide reading and writing instruction to students in grades five, six, seven, and eight by "pushing in" to the general education classrooms. Because I work within the general education setting, I not only provide support to students with special needs, but also to many other students who benefit from extra help. As someone who works across multiple grade levels, another important aspect of my role is working with my colleagues to ensure alignment between grade level expectations and supports.
