  • Peace, Love, Read - Time for Kids

    Funded Oct 22, 2020

Thank you for your donation. Your generosity was greatly appreciated.

This year was unlike any other. Though the year looked extremely differently, we as educators, gave our students the best year possible. It was extremely important to share my love for reading with my students. Through your donation, we were able keep up with current events which lead to rich conversations in the classroom.

The online tool was also extremely helpful as we were both in school and remote. Having this option made sure we could continue our routines at home. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Petruzzelli

  • Reading for a Purpose - Time for Kids

    Funded Aug 5, 2018

First, I would like to thank you for your generous donation. I promise your money is going to good use. Time for Kids is an extremely useful magazine for grade level students. It helps to connect them to current events in our world at their level. Through these articles, valuable reading skills and strategies are also taught. The magazine sparks conversation amongst students. Many students do not have the money to pay for the magazine, but through your donation each child is able to take home every weekend their own magazine. Adults read the newspaper on Sunday morning, we read Time for Kids! Thank you again for your support.”

  • Computer Science in the 21st Century Classroom

    Funded Nov 20, 2017

First, I would like to thank you for choosing my project to donate to. It is truly a special and exciting moment when you receive that email stating a project was funded.

All of the students in my class love the Secret Coder Books. Sometimes it is difficult to motivate students to want to read. The love for reading is created when students find books that they are interested in. I can say that every student in my class wanted to read the entire series. We had to set up an order of who gets what book next so there was no arguing over the books, that is rare!

Next, we received several games related to coding. We use these games to create centers during Computer Science on Fridays. My class enjoys learning coding through interactive games. They were so excited when the boxes arrives, many yelling out "I want to play that first." It truly makes me thrilled to see them so excited to take part in the lessons.

This learning environment of excitement could not have been created without your support. I am in the process of creating a new project. I have found many great ideas through other donors. I look forward to creating another project and hopefully going through this process again! Thank you for your donation!”

    With gratitude,

  • Flexible Seating for Sucess!

    Funded Sep 23, 2017

I would like to start by saying thank you! I was extremely excited when I found out my flexible seating project was funded. This school year I was able to loop up to the next grade with some of my same students. They were with me last year when my first donors choose project was funded. It was nice to share the funding of a second project. Many of my students do not like sitting in a traditional desk all day. The opportunity to have flexible seating was very exciting for them.

The items we received are used daily. We have an area with the two blow up chairs. The area does have to be monitored because they all want to sit there! I put cushions on top of the crates that can be moved around the classroom. They love sitting in groups on the crates to work together. Another item was the gardening mates. Students take these mates to sit on or lean on them to write around the room. They enjoy the comfort and flexibility of all the items.

I currently attend a Computer Science 4 All workshop. Mayor De Blasio has an initiative of having computer science taught in all public school classrooms. Every Friday I teach computer science lessons to the class. I would like my next project help fund computer science recourse's for my classroom! I look forward to sharing this project soon.

Thank you again for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Petruzzelli

  • Make Learning Come Alive!

    Funded Oct 11, 2016

First, I would like to thank you for donating money to my classroom. It was extremely exciting, for both myself and my students, to receive our materials in the mail. They are used daily since the day each item came in the mail. Today, technology is such an important part of everyday life. As an educator, it is very useful to have such technological resources in the classroom at hand for my students to use.

The first item we received was a speaker system with microphone. The microphone was an extremely important item to receive. Many times during class discussions or presentations it is very hard to hear some of the students. Many times their voices are so low it is often not engaging for their peers and many loose focus. The microphone ensures that all voices are heard! Students now get excited to come up to the front of the classroom, taking the microphone with confidence, they present with enthusiasm with all listening. Sometimes at the end of the school day we have "comedy time" where students tell jokes on the microphone!

The next items we received were two iPads. There are two major online programs my school uses to help students in reading and math, Reading Plus and Mathletics. Now that we have two iPads these programs are utilized daily by the students. Reading Plus is a great program that tracks students progress by training their eyes to read left to right going from line to line followed by a set of comprehension questions. On Mathletics students can compete against their classmates on their personal login answering math problems. Students love using these programs on the iPad and they truly do aid in their learning. Along with using the two programs, we use the iPads to show videos on youtube for our visual learners.

I thank you again for your donation. Your generosity was greatly appreciated and has impacted a classroom of learners!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Petruzzelli

I want my student to be able to record and create edit videos to document their learning. I want my students to use apps to reinforce their learning. One area my students struggle the most with is listening and speaking. I'm requesting 2 iPad airs and 1 microphone speaker set so that I can set up an interactive classroom. With the iPads, students will be able to listen to stories or practice listening to audio conversations to boost their listening and speaking confidence. In my classroom, we practice listening and speaking daily using cooperative learning strategies. In addition, students will be able to access apps that reinforce skills and enable higher level learning. An iPad helps students who are kinesthetic and visual learners open up the doors of education and individualize their learning experiences. The iPad will become a tool that will help create more authentic learning experiences in the classroom as well as build twenty first century skills that our children need in order to be successful in a quickly evolving technical world.
