In the third quarter of our Kindergarten year we will get eggs donated from a local farmer to hatch in our classroom. We are very lucky to have a local connection to donate and volunteer help in our classroom. We will spend the 21 days while the chick is growing inside the egg talking about what is happening. We will use vocabulary such as embryo, oviparous, viviparous, yolk, air sac, egg tooth, fertile and infertile to build our knowledge of animals around us. We will spend time discussing what chickens need to grow and why they are useful to us. After the chicks hatch we will observe their growth in our classroom for a few weeks and identify the hens and roosters that have hatched. Then we will allow families to adopt out the chicks and take them home to raise as food for their families or egg laying hens! We are asking for a bigger more efficient incubator so that our hatch rate is much more successful than we have had in the past. Also we would like to explore other animals that hatch from eggs and hatch those birds as well. We have met several local community members we are willing to donate quail eggs, pheasant eggs, and turkey eggs for us to hatch with the students as well. I am very excited at the opportunities we would be able to provide with this more advanced incubator and supplies!
