The students in our school are 100% free and reduced lunch and majority English Language Learners. They are behind in their literacy learning as they begin school not knowing any English and have to learn the sounds and the academic vocabulary of the English language before they can learn how to read. We have recently learned that Michigan has ranked LOWEST in the Nation for child literacy proficiency. Our school has worked tirelessly this year to improve the structures and strategies we use to teach literacy to our K-2 students. We are in need of support to supply students with engaging activities that hold their attention and keep them excited about learning how to read. I am asking for hands-on center activities, manipulatives (magnetic letters and word work activity stations) for teachers to use in their small groups, and interesting text sets for teachers to read with their students.
