Many of the students that come to me have already decided that they don't like math. However, when they are given a chance to explore with hands-on material and manipulatives, they grow an exciting love for and understanding of mathematics! When students enjoy a topic, they are more likely to want to understand it and therefore lead to increased student achievement! Then, as students achieve, they will, in turn, develop and increased awareness of their abilities and have an intrinsic desire to do even more! This desire and value will be beneficial to the student, school, and community as a whole! Many students find it difficult to understand fractions, algebra, and integers. However, if they are provided with hands-on opportunities to explore these topics, they are more likely to obtain a lasting understanding of them. Students are able to formulate their own understandings of fractions, algebra, and integers with the use of fraction tiles, algebra tiles, and counters. Students also enjoy a math game that also teaches concepts such as area and perimeter, as the Blokus game provides.
