Diversity in the Speech Room
Funded Oct 22, 2020Thank you so much for contributing to my project, Diversity in the Speech Room. I was able to receive books that show representation for the students I teach. We soon turned to remote teaching, however I have been adding read alouds of the books to my digital classroom. The TpT gift cards have also been amazing during this time. I have been able to purchase digital companion packs and digital materials which are greatly needed during hybrid and remote learning.
My students love any opportunity to see new books in the classroom, so they have been very excited when I change out my monthly books. They are also thrilled with the variety of Boom Cards and interactive PDF's I have been able to use during virtual therapy sessions. This project also gave me books that I can suggest to colleagues to help them diversify their rooms!
I am continuing to search for materials and introducing these books to my students. I know your generous donations have provided my students with many opportunities to enhance and increase their language skills.”

Teach Me to Talk!
Funded May 6, 2019Thank you so much for your donation, the toys for my classroom has had such an impact on my students. My students were delighted when they saw new toys. I have gradually introduced them in to their speech sessions. The ball popper was especially a big hit! The laughter and engagement of students has been remarkable!
These items have been multi purpose in my classroom. For some students, they help build a rapport when they come to speech. For other students, they get to pick an item and are rewarded with it after doing great speech work. For all students, they serve as a way to enhance speech. Some are developing a use of a picture system to request and communicate the toy they want to play with. Other students are encouraged to use a sign, sound, word, or sentence to indicate what they want to play with. These toys are highly engaging, so it has been successful in accomplishing their speech goals.
I truly appreciate your donation to my project. My students now have more opportunities to express themselves and are making progress daily towards their
speech and language skills.”

Funded Apr 7, 2018Thank you so much for donating towards our new classroom iPad. Being able to implement this technology and updated apps has already had such a positive impact on my students. The iPad is being used in different ways to help the variety of students I have on my caseload. They were all so excited when I showed them the new classroom iPad!
My students that are nonverbal or have limited language skills are using it to communicate during speech. For example, using an app on the iPad they are able to tell me how they are feeling today, if they need me to open something, what they want to do, and (most importantly) if they need to go to the bathroom. This alleviates their frustrations which can decrease behaviors and also teaches them the benefit of communication. Once these students understand the benefit of communication, we typically see an increase in their motivation to communicate.
My students with autism are using the iPad to further their understanding of how to answer a wh- question, how to follow directions, and learning about social skills. We also are using an app that has a library of books, some which can be read to them, which is very exciting! For example, I have one student who loves dinosaurs and we have listened to dinosaur books which also helps build vocabulary and listening skills.
My students with articulation difficulties look forward to when they can use the articulation apps during speech. It is very motivating for them to be able to record and listen back right in the app! This helps with their self monitoring skills which is very important to correcting some of those stubborn sounds like /s/ and /r/.
I am very grateful for your generosity to this project. I have seen many student's faces light up when they know they will be able to use the iPad in speech. Your support is very appreciated.”
