  • Journals for Creativity & Confidence: A "Freedom Writers" Experience

    Funded Nov 26, 2024

I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity in supporting my students through our DonorsChoose project. Because of you, my 10th-grade students now have their own journals and journaling supplies—simple but powerful tools that are making a real difference in their learning and self-expression.

The excitement in the room was undeniable when I first distributed the journals. Some students immediately began flipping through the blank pages, imagining what they would write. Others carefully selected their favorite pen or highlighter, eager to make their first mark. But what has truly amazed me is how these journals have become more than just classroom tools. Some students are taking them home and writing because they want to—a testament to the power of giving students ownership over their words and thoughts.

In class, I provide time for students to journal, allowing them to reflect, process ideas, and build confidence in their writing. Journaling has given them a space to explore their thoughts freely, without the pressure of grades or formal structure. I've seen reluctant writers start filling pages, and students who struggle with verbal expression find their voice through writing.

Moving forward, these journals will continue to be an essential part of our classroom. Whether we are using them for personal reflection, brainstorming for essays, or responding to literature, they will serve as a safe space for students to think, create, and grow. Your generosity has not only provided supplies—you have ignited a love for writing in students who might not have discovered it otherwise.

Thank you for making this possible. Your support has had a lasting impact, and my students and I are deeply grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hollick

  • Choose Your Own Adventure Books for Low-Income Students

    Funded Dec 14, 2017

I greatly appreciate your donation to bring Choose Your Own Adventure Books to my students. I enjoyed reading these books myself when I was younger and knew my students would love them too! For many of my students, these are the first stories that they have read, and I believe it's because they made the choices about what happened next - they were in control of the story!

I teach Reading for College Success, which is essentially an intensive reading class for high school students to prepare them for their state assessments and for tech schools and college. One of my goals this year was to show students that reading can be fun, which we accomplished by introducing these books into my classroom! I have a few students that read every single ending of their book because they wanted to see what would happen if they made different choices. I had a couple students read a couple different Choose Your Own Adventure Books as they worked on their project because they wanted to see what would happen in other stories. I think most of them were surprised that they liked reading these books so much.

I also wanted students to see that they can learn from what they read, so while they read, the students learned about how complex characters develop throughout the story. They completed several activities to analyze how the characters develop: They illustrated their character and highlighted key events that changed the character in some way; they also plotted the character's thoughts, actions, and responses on a plot diagram to track how their character changed throughout the story. At the end, the students presented their book choice to the class, so the other students could hear about some of the other Choose Your Own Adventure books.

Thank you so much, again, for your donation. I look forward to passing these books onto my students for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hollick
