Reading in Math Adds Up
Funded Jun 18, 2017My students eyes grew bigger when they saw the shiny, colorful books we received. They applauded when I told them how they were donated by a very generous person and a great program. They were eager to touch and hold them. Before I passed them around, I told them they were math related books to help them understand math a little better. Some students flipped through the books while others read pages together. I heard lots of math vocabulary and excitement while they passed them around.
My students read the books during math stations and refer back to them when working on math problems. The books are also used as extension activities in their math stations . I must say that I chose the right book to begin our math book engagement by reading 'The Math Curse". My students in particular one of the girls loved it and rereads it over and over again. It was a funny book for them and now they refer back to it as we encounter new math problems.
I read the Place Value book to a small group of children in intervention to help them understand the place value concept. They loved and laughed at the little character monkeys and were able to respond correctly to the questions given afterwards. I have also introduced our current unit of fractions with the Hershey's Book. It was engaging and students were able to view it as a whole group on the Promethean board. I am very grateful for having the books for my students.”
With gratitude,
