Our Sea of Tranquility Sensory Room Is Open!
Funded Nov 22, 2023Thank you for contributing to our Sensory Room at PS 55. The variety of materials and activities, engages our students as a way to unwind, concentrate and motivate. Some of these items include ways to engage the senses and make a child feel relaxed and welcome.
Students receive opportunities through out the day to visit the sensory room during their social emotional learning. They can engage solo or with a friend. They bring an independent book for some meaningful reading time or can participate with the sensory environment.
Thank you again for being an integral contributor to our school's new initiative of social emotional learning with the installation of our sensory room. We appreciate your support always.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Gainer
Super Sensory
Funded Nov 9, 2023I am so thrilled to give my students the opportunity to explore and meditate in our new sensory room "Sea of Tranquility". Our sensory room is a place of comfort and joy from our Prek- to our 5th graders. The room is used to help students with transitions, movement breaks, or to wind down. When I brought my class for the first time, they were very excited to use the new items in the sensory room.
They used the peanut ball and the spike walk discs as a way to move around and relax after a social studies class. They move around freely and responsibly to take a break from the rigor of the classroom. The stress balls and squish discs are good tactile stimulators after typing of writing in a rigorous classroom. It helps the students stretch and squeeze their fingers so they can reinvigorate to continue their classwork studies.
As we continue to visit our sensory room as part of our social emotional learning and growing, we will bring our eight competency knowledge as well as literature books on our visits. We share in collaborative reading and discussion while rotating to the various sensory stations in a relaxed but engaging way. Thank you for being part of my students' experiences in providing this super sensory journey!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Gainer
