My students will become detectives along with the 16 heirs in the book, The Westing Game. We will read this great classic together as a class as we keep a detective log of each suspect/heir in the book. We will document clues, suspicious behaviors, and any known facts that are revealed to the readers but possibly not to the characters in the book. Through this novel study, we will pull apart an intricate plot with many twists and turns along the way. Each student needs his/her own copy of the book to follow along while we read, search for clues other classmates might miss, and catch the many homophones, puns, and new vocabulary used in the mystery. We will be working on siting evidence directly from the story that supports our many predictions and inferences we will make as we progress through the story. This is a highly emphasized skill in our standards as well as in our standardized tests, not to mention a necessary skill in life. We will also conclude the book study by bringing to life our own version of The Westing Game, making wanted posters for each of the suspects, and various other engaging activities that bring meaning to the text. I am asking for your support in helping to bring a classic book to life for these young readers.
