There are many times a day when students have to make good choices about their work environment. As we build our understanding of what good learners do and what personal space is (things each person must understand and be able to do to function in society) it helps to have the necessary structures to reinforce those goals. We will use this rug several times every day as part of our lessons. My students' lives aren't always comfortable and spacious, colorful and helpful. Many come from homes shared by a few families and where making ends meet is a daily struggle. Many have the job of learning on their own when they go home. There is plenty of love but the real learning has to be done in class. We have to be able to focus on the lessons at hand to get the most out of the day. A comfortable and safe classroom environment eliminates those distractions and supports each student, regardless of their home life, so the whole class can prosper. Much of the time we will use this carpet together, however, they will also have opportunities to put their understanding of our goals into practice on their own during quiet reading times and math game time. As they work on their writing they may even discover that one of the words they need to complete an idea is on the carpet!
