  • Solving Mysteries with "Breakout EDU Kit"!

    Funded May 13, 2019

Thank you for your donation towards my project. My students were so excited to get to participate in an Escape Room. So many of my students have wished to experience an Escape Room like their parents.

We have done 2 Escape Rooms since receiving our materials. First, we have a program at our school called Saturday Stars. Students voluntarily come to school on Saturday to work on skills that they may need extra support. Since it is a Saturday we like to try new lesson ideas. We used the "Candy Shop" Escape Room. The room was decorated as a candy shop and the students had to solve rounding problems to figure out how to "escape". They were so excited and could not wait to solve the problems.

Our second "Escape Room" involved metric conversions. This is not usually an exciting topic for my students. Our campus is on 35 acres of wooded area in the middle of Indianapolis. So, we set-up a metric Escape Room outdoors using the wooded trails for clues. It was an amazing experience and the students were asking to try another one even before we completed this one!

Thanks again for your support. As you may remember my school services inner-city children in an outdoor environmental school setting. The majority of my students do not have the resources to experience innovation educational experiences. Your donations have made this possible for the kids to enjoy learning. Please look for my future STEM related projects. Your donations greatly help me provide outside the box learning experiences for these amazing future leaders.”

    With gratitude,

  • Fishing for A Novel In A Tree

    Funded Aug 15, 2018

I can't begin to express the gratitude for the books. My students especially enjoyed the fact that major part was funded by the author herself. We are half way through the novel. This novel is used to teach daily reading skills through a whole-class literature circle as well as discussions about acceptance.

During our reading group, I pose a daily question for the students to reflect upon while we read. The questions not only test for comprehension but gives the students a chance to focus on personal traits that be applied in the real-world. For example, today's question was, "Do you agree with Ally's definition of "alone" and "lonely"? Use details from the text to support your answer. Students are given time to provide a written response and then we share out. This sharing leads to some excellent discussions and provides a deeper understanding of the story for all students.

Again, thank you to everyone that contributed towards this project. Our schools need more generous people like yourselves to help teachers provide necessary materials to low-income schools. It was so awesome to see my students reaction knowing that people care enough about their education to buy us a classroom set of novels.”
