Taking the time donating to this projects gets our students a sense of stability in the classroom. Due to their disabilities, several of my students can't control the way their bodies feel.By providing this sensory room for our students, we allow them the opportunity to take control for a while. We allow our students a sense of calming. Providing them a sensory room, a space to move while performing academic task, also allows them a place they feel they can be successful. This will give them something to be proud of. They will feel accomplished and proud of themselves. They ARE ABLE to complete a task successfully despite their disability. In our school and in my classroom, THE STUDENT comes BEFORE THE DISABILITY. We understand our students and their needs. We work with the student so they can be successful in the classroom as well as in society. In order to be successful in our classroom, it's necessary to embed movement breaks and sensory activities throughout the day. Due to their disabilities, my students have difficulty working for long periods of time without this break. Without the break there is often an increase in behavior thus interfering with their learning. This is especially important for my students with autism. Unfortunately, our school lacks the equipment and funds for us to provide an appropriate sensory room for my students. A sensory room allows my students to get the movement break they need along with an academic task.
