Research shows that when students are comfortable, they are more engaged. As educators, we know that engaged students are successful students. They are more motivated to learn and in turn do their best work and attain higher levels of achievement. My goal is to provide by students with a variety of seating options that will promote learning and focus. Children, by nature, are active and need to move...A LOT! When I think about how I work best, it isn't at a cramped desk where I am expected to sit still. I like to spread out and make myself comfortable. It is only then that I do my best work. If this is the case, why should I expect it to be any different for my students? They need to be given room to work in a comfortable space. In my classroom, we focus on collaborative groups and project based learning. Flexible seating is much more conducive to this style of learning than traditional desks and chairs. Allowing students to choose how and where they will work helps them to explore what works best for them, increases focus and reduces behavior problems. It is for these reasons that I am requesting a variety of alternative seating options for my classroom. Wobble chairs, stability balls and disks will allow children to move while they are working, thus increasing focus and concentration. This will also decrease the tipping of chairs that becomes a safety hazard as people are moving around the room. Bean bag chairs will provide comfortable seating options that will give our classroom a feeling of home thus lowering the affective filter that many students come to school with. It is for these reasons that I am requesting a variety of alternative seating options for my classroom.
