As adults, we all know it can be hard to sit still at times, but, because we are adults, we are essentially allowed to stand up and walk around anytime we want throughout our work day. Unfortunately for our kids, this isn't seen as acceptable throughout a 7-hour school day. They sit as a whole group at the carpet, sit on the floor or sit at their desk to read, write, do math, science, social studies, socialize, have snack, and, when acceptable, play. They sit at lunch and have structured sitting spots in art, music, library, computer lab and even during physical education.
We all know that when we are able to make a choice about our learning and what works best for us, we learn much better! Research has shown that flexible seating helps to burn more calories, use up more energy, improve metabolism, increase motivation and engagement, create better oxygen flow to the brain and improve core strength and overall posture. It is no surprise that students who participate in more physical activity throughout their school day have more on-task behavior. Pair this with student choice, and you have a wonderful thing.
My students need 5 tablets and flexible seating to increase engagement and choice and create an overall classroom environment where they feel empowered to take responsibility for their own learning. I am requesting raisers for tables, stools, bean bag chairs, wobble discs, yoga mats, stability balls, and Kindle tablet. With the integration of flexible seating, I would also like to offer enhanced reading opportunities through technology and engaging apps.
With your help, we can create more inviting and engaging classrooms. Where student behavior issues are minimal, students can make real choices that reflect their learning style and enable them to understand their unique learning style while improving technology background and behaviors.
