Engagement is the key to hooking reluctant readers to pick up a book and read. Our Department Book Closet is full of American Classics written by old dead white men. This works fine for students planning on a college career, but for reluctant readers with academic challenges, it doesn't work as well. My students are looking for diversity in their characters and authors as well as contemporary books that will hook and engage them. Because of the type of students I teach, my classroom tends to be very male heavy, generally a class of 30 may have, at most, 5 females. I've been building my curriculum library out of my own pocket with The Help and Life of Pi. These do a good job of engaging them in current events regarding social issues, be it race, gender, sexuality or religion. What I'm lacking is something that will hit my guys in the gut emotionally. My guys have thick walls built around what they call their "feels." Boys love dogs. The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of those hit you in the emotional gut books that I believe will help them get in touch with their feelings and show them that we all make mistakes. And that's okay.
