The setting I am currently working in is in its third year with our school district. The student population for this setting is selected based on their specific needs. Most of the students in my classroom are diagnosed with anxiety disorders, ADHD, depression and other mental health impairments. They have not been successful in a traditional classroom setting due to large class sizes and a lack of trained staff. Because of this they are behind in all areas of their academics, are at high risk for suspension and expulsion and have been moved around quite often creating a lack of stability. Creating a sensory area away from the classroom will provide my students with the space they need to learn to cope with their frustrations and lead in turn to increased academic success. The goal of my program is to stabilize the students behavior while building their academic gaps in a temporary setting. Because this is a temporary setting my students do not have access to PE or arts classes. Having a designated space for the children to feel comfortable to talk to therapists/teachers, feel free enough to get their energy out without disrupting others and have a variety of materials available to meet their varied learning styles will allow my staff to make larger strides in the therapeutic portion of their education and will ultimately increase their academic gaps. The materials selected will provide comfort (tent, books, smaller sensory items) as well as allow for high energy outbursts (carpet, balance ball maze). The area will be available to all students in the program as well as students in the building as a place to visit with supervised staff or check out items to be used in their own classrooms.
