Teaching Kids We Are All Welcome: Diversity and Multicultural Awareness
Funded Sep 17, 2021Teaching in NYC lends itself to learning about and embracing different cultures, races and religions. We are the melting pot, after all. However, just living here does not negate the fact that kindness, tolerance and acceptance need to be taught and continuously reinforced. Starting to teach these values at a young age is crucial to keeping peace and equality in our society.
The materials from this project have helped my students recognize that differences make us special and unique. They have enjoyed reading the stories that highlight and celebrate differences. The multicultural dolls have quickly become a favorite as the children love seeing dolls that look like them. We have made several projects using our skin colored papers, crayons and markers which enable each child to accurately represent themselves and their families. I love watching them hold the crayons up to their skin to find their perfect match!
The family puzzles also remind the children that families can be different and everyone's family is special.
Thanks to your donations, I have been able to teach and show my students that everyone is welcome!”

Funded Sep 12, 2021You can't imagine how happy my Pre Kinders were when they saw all the new arts and crafts materials we received from this project!
They have truly enjoyed using all the new paints, markers, crayons and supplies to create a multitude of projects that go with our areas of study. Many of them have never experienced using such a variety of craft materials and they are thrilled to be able to experiment with them and create their own artwork! As you can see from my pictures, the kids love being little artists!
Thank you so much for helping me bring creativity into my classroom!”

Funded Aug 31, 2021Thank you so much for contributing to my project! Having these new toys and materials for my dramatic play area have enabled my students to use their imaginations and interact in such creative ways! I have set up a Home Living Center in my classroom which has become the most popular area to play in. The children love dressing up, pretending to cook and pretending to be parents. I very often hear them talking about who they're dressed up as and what food they are making! I love when they come running up to me to "feed" me what they have "cooked!"
The children have also really enjoyed the new activity table and building blocks! Watching them work together to build buildings and create scenes has been amazing! It helps foster problem solving, creativity, and great conversations!
Thank you all for playing a role in bringing these wonderful materials to my classroom!”

Funded Sep 4, 2020As you know, this year, students are having a school experience like no other. Social distancing, wearing masks and remote schooling have changed the way students are learning and engaging at school. In my Kindergarten class, I have been trying keep the children engaged and excited while having to keep them apart. That is where my project comes in. Providing my students with their own, individual materials so they could play and learn together has been very successful. The individual magnet writers, paints, play doh boards, book baggies and books, have enabled my students to continue to have fun while remaining socially distant. I have been able to make craft kits for each child using the containers and materials from my project. Those were a huge hit!!
My students have been in a blended learning model since September, and when they are in person, they get so excited to see what new things I have for them to use in school. Many of my students have limited resources at home, so they really appreciate the things we provide for them in school. Thanks to your generosity, my students have been able to explore with so many new materials.
After the holidays, we are hoping to all be back together, in person, 5 days a week. I am looking forward to bringing more smiles to my students' faces. Thanks to all of you, I will be able to do that!
Thank you so much!”

The Science of Today is the Technology of Tomorrow
Funded Dec 30, 2016Nothing compares to the looks on my students' faces when we received all our project materials! "This is so exciting!", "These new materials are so cool!", and "When can we use them?" were some of the first reactions from the children. Their eyes opened wide as we opened up the packages and explored what was inside. " I see animals!", "I see books!", " I see magnets!" It was incredible!
When the students had a chance to explore with some of the materials, their curious minds and creative juices immediately started flowing. One group was using the magnetic fishing game. They loved catching the fish with the magnetized fishing rod. The group was discussing how some fish could be caught but others couldn't. After some trial and error, they figured out that not all of the fish had metal inside. They then decided to figure out how to catch the most fish. They accomplished this by stacking the fish, grabbing then from different angles, and by holding the rod closer/ further away from the fish. Not only were the children able to explore using the magnets, but they we working cooperatively and having some great discussions about what they were doing. Another group was exploring with the Motion kit. They were working together to build ramps using the blocks. They were able to figure out that the more blocks they used, the more angled the ramp was. This made the cars move faster. They had so much fun! We are all really looking forward to using all our new materials throughout the rest of the school year!
We are currently learning all about winter and snow in class. We will be using the Newsstand books about snow for partner reading and small group reading. The information obtained will help us with our informational writing about snow. As we learn about snow and how it melts, that will lead us into learning about water. At that time, we will be using the Sink and Float kit. So, as you can see, we will be having a great time exploring and learning with all our new Science materials!
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. Your donation has put smiles on 25 children's faces!”
