High school poetry suffers from an image problem. Cut-up magnetic words can teach poetry, grammar, and literary devices to high school students, almost all of whom learned English as a second language. Here, teens learn to identify adjectives and adverbs, and use parallel structure, alliteration, assonance, and other figures of speech. Short poems make textual analysis more manageable for struggling English students: they represent manageable yet meaningful exercises in authentic English but are less intimidating to read and write. We will create some of the poetry on an outdoor magnetic board – a school community opportunity to embrace the diverse voices that enrich us all.
