The "New Chapter" Book Group will give staff the opportunity to read for pleasure and connect with other staff members. Staff can read one or several of the eight books being offered throughout 2021. The titles are from a variety of genres, and once a staff member commits to a book, they will read the book, share their reading experience with a Book Buddy, and participate in a final book session. Since virtual instruction has become the new normal, teachers are more isolated and stressed, which is why we need to strengthen the connections and emotional health of teachers. School is a lonely place right now. Teachers are holding virtual and in-person classes, recording videos, and planning in isolation. Staff meetings are also virtual. The screen time leaves teachers feeling drained and disconnected. The purpose of the "New Chapter" Book Group is to connect staff, enjoy reading, and look forward to a “new chapter” in life. This book group will aim to restore a strong sense of community and provide mutual support. Everyone knows, “You must put your oxygen mask on first,” meaning that you cannot help someone else until you help yourself. By reading and connecting through books, staff will be more available for students, have more energy, and build stronger collaborative relationships. The healthier the teacher, the happier the student. Students need their teachers to be fully available for them, and feeding teachers’ minds and souls through literature and personal connections is a simple approach to building strong, healthy staff. Please give an oxygen mask to a teacher by supporting the "New Chapter" Book Group.
