Physical Activity Needed to Boost Brain Development and Academic Outcomes

Funded Oct 9, 2024

Thank you so much for helping us purchase the indoor climbing materials for our prekindergarten classroom. The children use it every day! Since they love it, they are also very careful with each other when climbing on it together, taking turns and showing awareness of other children's bodies. It has been great for building classroom community, social skills, and the children's confidence. All the while we know it is helping to develop neural pathways and crucial brain integration that leads to better learning and outcomes. And it gives them one more reason to enjoy coming to school!

In addition to honing their balance and climbing skills, the children use the structure as a catalyst for other kinds of learning. They used the climbing platform as a bridge when reenacting the story of the three billy goats gruff. One child would act as the troll under the bridge, and three other children would assume the roles of goats going over the bridge. This reinforced their early literacy skills necessary to become good readers later on. The children also used the triangle as a support for a large cardboard tube to experiment with cars, ramps, and tunnels, an early STEM exploration.

I am certain that we will find many more ways to enjoy and learn with these climbing structures. I think next we will put a blanket over the triangle and set up a dramatic play camping experience. We are all very grateful and appreciative of your kindness in donating so the children can have these rich and engaging learning experiences.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Barbara
