Developing fine motor skills in young children helps build a necessary foundation to becoming independent children who are able to successfully use executive skills. Strong fine motor development allows children to get dressed, feed themselves, use scissors, draw, write, improve dexterity and build self confidence. Four and five year-olds thrive when given their own materials and space to touch, create, manipulate and problem solve. These supplies will allow me to provide my Pre-Kindergarten students fun, hands on, sensory and developmentally appropriate activities that will keep them engaged and learning, whether I am teaching in person or remotely. Trays give children a boundary to gain spatial awareness and organization, as well as provide an easy to clean space. Pencil boxes create individual sensory and center activities that can be used in the classroom to limit the spread of germs and shared materials OR that can be sent home for remote learning times. Using droppers, scoops and tweezers enable children to make connections to their own lives as they try to make sense of new concepts and ideas while they are strengthening those finger muscles! Playdough, kinetic sand, large dice and mini erasers can be used to not only put little hands to work, they support critical thinking, math concepts and expanding vocabulary. Strong and fit fingers, makes strong and fit minds!
