Walk a Mile

Funded Apr 6, 2021

Thank you so much for contributing to the TCR Walk A Mile project. Students have been browsing the display, asking lots of questions about what it means, and selecting books that speak to them and open their minds to others' journeys. We've got lots of interested readers. Entries for the Walk A Mile program are growing.

Our checkouts have gone up considerably from last year. I looked at the data from average checkouts from January 2021 compared to January 2022 to get a better idea of the impact. Students were coming into school on a reduced schedule and many were staying with remote learning. January 2021 had 293 checkouts; January 2022 had 1383. Hooray!

The students I am noticing who are especially interested in this program are those students that could be identified as minority. I was hoping to impact empathy and understanding in all our students, with a focus on those who are perhaps more fortunate in order to foster compassion for those less so. I believe this project has also helped more minority students feel represented and seen as well as opened some hearts.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Perry
