I will be working with a caseload of 15 students in the upper elementary. Students have a range of needs and disabilities and come from varying backgrounds. We have seen an increase in Social-Emotional needs that directly impact our instruction. Respecting our students' emotions and allowing them a place and opportunity to regroup has shown tremendous benefits to learning. Students trust that they have a safe place to express emotions and feel supported in their learning. Instead of letting frustration and heightened emotions get out of control, students find that the chill zone allows them the time and space they need to regain control. Situations and emotions can be diffused before they get out of control. In addition to the furniture and materials requested students will be taught strategies and techniques that they can use while in the chill zone to help regulate their emotions. Time is spent at the beginning of the year going over expected and unexpected behaviors in the chill zone, ensuring that students may use this space independently.
