Black women are historically underrepresented in careers in mathematics. Hidden Figures is a factual account of Black female mathematicians defying the odds from the 1940s to the 1960s. Introducing my students to women that they can identify with will enable them to become more confident in their mathematical ability and inspire them to seek careers requiring strong mathematical backgrounds. Our students should no longer be the hidden figures, but be on the front lines for evoking change in our society. Many of our students experience social injustices on a daily basis. It is my hope that through analysis of the book and movie our students will see themselves as valuable assets to our community.
