  • Sensory Learning

    Funded Oct 21, 2022

I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your generous donations and describe to you the significant impact these materials are having on my students.

The stretchy bands have been the most helpful. We placed 1 band on each students' chair. As they sit, they can now bounce their feet on the bands, giving themselves the sensory input they seek in a safe manner. We sit on the foam carpet during yoga breaks and morning meeting activities. We can break the pieces apart if we are working independently as in yoga, or put them together if we are working together such as during circle time. Our students love the shaggy blue rug the best. They were so excited when they first saw and felt it. It is used for extra sensory input when students can opt to sit or lay on the rug during activities such as independent reading, or request a break to calm down or refocus. The pressure vests were a great addition. After being introduced to it, students can now request when they need the extra input and can wear a vest for a controlled period of time. Our students are overall calmer, safer, and more focused in order to learn and excel to the best of their abilities.”

    With gratitude,

  • Art for Creative Self Expression and Self Regulation

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

I want to take the time to thank you for donating to our classroom art projects and to explain the impact that these materials have had on my students.

My school is located in a low-income community and many of my students would not have had access to many of these fun and exciting materials such as watercolor paint and clay. Watercolor paint has been a favorite. My students had fun exploring the paint sets by adding different amounts of water, using different types of brushes, painting on different materials and then seeing and learning how all of these things interact with one another. For my students with learning disabilities, this lesson of cause and effect goes far beyond that of art, touching on reading and science (ie- oil and water resist each other. Resist means "to push away from each other").

Many of my students have a difficult time focusing on a task for long periods of time. They get antsy and have to move around, often times making mistakes or a mess. With these materials, I have been able to teach my students that in art, mistakes are ok- sometimes an accidental spill or "wrong" line makes a beautiful work of art. I have seen students sit u straighter, smile, and feel pride when realizing that THEY created that. They made something beautiful.

Thank you again for providing my students with these wonderful lessons and opportunities via art materials.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Polley

Our students love exploring new art materials and techniques, as well as using familiar materials differently. Drawing and painting activities such as mixing and blending colors help students chose the right color scheme to express themselves when their words fail them, a skill we continue to practice in conjunction with Speech Therapy. For many of our students, self expression, along with many verbal based skills, is a difficult concept. Many of our students connect to the world around them through pictures or other visuals. As educators, we learn that no two students learn the same. That holds true for our students who have various types of disabilities. Our students sometimes struggle to be heard or to express themselves effectively and thus become frustrated. Lessons that introduce new materials such as clay will help students to use their hands to throw and squeeze in a productive and creative way, thus helping to self regulate their frustrations or other negative feelings they may have.
