  • Phonics Tools Can Help Everyone Access Information Independently

    Thank you so much for the tremendous resources you provided our class. My students use the phonics materials daily. I am noticing real growth and engagement in their use of vowel teams, beginning and ending blends, and ability to correct mistakes. Each day, students who are often considered striving learners are utilizing tools to build their fluency and confidence. They playfully build real and "martian" words, checking each other's work and then using these words in a sentence. They are engaged and feeling confident.

    When the supplies first arrived, there were gasps of amazement at the size of the very first box. Then, as the boxes continued to arrive, the children were just amazed over and over at how many boxes there were. One student looked at me and asked, "Just how much did you ask for?" As materials came out of the boxes and students began to see how they would use the materials, they began asking to complete certain tasks so they could use the "new" stuff.

    I am so thankful to Herb Kohl Philanthropies. The impact this organization has had on schools and educators is often understated but always appreciated. Through their gift to our classroom on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I was able to reinvigorate the energy of striving learners to study in a more playful way. Rather than dreading their time in phonics, they looked forward to their work. They were willing to complete puzzles repeatedly until we began to see the impact of their work result in their writing and reading.

    In the next month of school, we are finishing up our year strong. We will continue to use our phonics tools and also build a "Poet-Tree" with writing we created in April to celebrate Poetry Month. We will visit the pond near our school to reinforce some of the life cycle work we have focused on in science. At the end of the year, however, we will finish the year with Camp Third Grade where they will use all of the things they have learned in second grade to complete challenges and create memories. It is a bittersweet time of year. Each year, there is a bitter moment when it is time to say goodbye but there is also sweetness as we celebrate tremendous growth.
