My students require information provided through spoken, written, and visual aids to increase their comprehension and bridge spoken language to the concepts I am teaching. Visual materials are a critical aspect to expanding their learning and comprehension of spoken and written information. I bridge their home language and English by sending home printable books in both English and Spanish. For example, our classroom rules: be safe, be responsible, and be respectful, are abstract concepts my students have difficulty understanding. Therefore, I print images portraying different ways students can be responsible, respectful, and safe at school. Through discussions and books, students help sort the images into the corresponding rule. These types of visual aids and activities expand their language and comprehension of words and concepts such as "responsible" and "respectful". Students then take home "Book Bags" containing laminated and bound printed books in both English and Spanish on the concepts taught within the classroom. This allows parents to read academic themed books to their child in their native language, bridging English and Spanish while emphasizing academic concepts at home. It is difficult to print mass copies, colored images relating to classroom discussions, and producing "A-Z Learning" books in color due to our current resources. I currently bring my home printer/copier back and forth from home to school. However, it does not print quality photos and I am unable to afford or meet the visual needs of my students and their families using my home printer and current materials. We need a printer/copier, paper trimmer, laminating pouches, paper, and book binding spines.
