  • Shoulder Rests Make You Heads and Shoulders Above the Rest!

    Funded Dec 30, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation! Your donation has facilitated my students to have equipment that is vital towards their playing in tune. Every violin and viola student in my orchestra has a shoulder rest, and the tuners have sped up our beginning of class tuning procedures.

Our shoulder rests came across 2 boxes, in separate shipments, so when the first box came, they were surprised, but still a little skeptical. As soon as I could, I etched all of them with district information to avoid them from walking off at the end of the year. At this point, I started distributing them to everyone. Now if a student's caught not using one (from obviously poor hand position), they're told to put their shoulder rest on their instrument. Funny thing: They're always relieved at the difference in security; they were just too used to NOT using the shoulder rest.

Also, I double-triple checked that EVERYONE had a shoulder rest (new or old), and that's been included in their instrument check-out.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Alfaro

  • Big Kids That Need Bigger Instruments

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

My advanced strings students were very excited to receive their new instruments. I let them unpack the new instruments. It was like opening presents! That only added to their excitement, and helped their disbelief about what they receiving. They are not used to shiny new things, let alone expensive, shiny, new things! But they have routinely proven to me that they are responsible.

Their old instruments went to new beginners. They were very excited to receive an instrument, and hopefully they will continue in advanced strings, next year. Thanks to this donation, they and other students will have more appropriately sized instruments waiting for them next year.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Alfaro

I teach 5th/6th instrumental music across 6 sites in Hayward, CA. Interest in my program is still high, even though I have run out of instruments to lend. Many families I serve would not be able to afford a rental, let alone a purchase, of an instrument. Stringed instruments are built in varied sizes to accommodate smaller, younger players. While I have managed to lend out nearly all of my inventory, I still have many near-adult-sized students that need larger instruments. I particularly have many 6th-graders that are ready for full-size instruments, but they are unable to purchase their own, and for some strange reason, I have very few 3/4-size instruments for students that are not quite ready for a full-size instrument. I have many 5th-graders on 1/4- and 1/2-sized instruments that will out-grow those instrument during this year, and will need larger instruments to play on, next year.
