The use of color pictures and materials is of daily use in my special education classroom. We use color to enhance learning and to influence the mood in the classroom. The colors we use with the students are deliberately used because they can have a major impact on the child’s mood and how they learn and absorb information. The use of colored materials also lends itself to having discussions about how colors are used to create emotional reactions. Because of budget cuts in our school, our classroom has limited access to color printing. My students also come from low social economic households and may not always have the experiences of knowing what certain objects are or look like. Having color pictures of objects to introduce and discuss in lessons would help immensely to build on student’s vocabulary. They will also have greater success when trying to match real objects to picture objects when called for in our lessons. I have noticed that the more color is utilized in our classroom materials, the more I see how much of an impact it has on all aspects of my students learning.
