With the ever growing focus on STEM, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, within our educational system, we often look towards robotics and other technologies as modes of teaching these concepts. I am proposing you to step forward into supporting me in delivering a STEM education while connecting kids back with natural world through gardening.
“Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our chidlren's health (and also, by the way, in our own)."-Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.
By making a donation, small or big, towards my project you will be providing me with the necessary supplies to begin teaching math, science, reading, and social studies through gardening. As a class we have been collecting milk cartons to use with the potting soil to conduct student-led experiments. The Growlab Mobile Garden will enable my students to grow a variety of vegetables year-round; once harvested they will be used as a healthy alternative for snack time. They will use magnify glasses and Root-Vue Farm to closely observe the growing stages of the vegetables.
These observations will aid them in making accurate and thorough journal recordings/data entries that will lead to presentations that will be presented to the three other second grade classrooms. The mobility of the Growlab provides the students a visual aid to supplement my students presentations while providing a better understanding of the concepts for the other second graders. These lessons will be inquiry-based with hands-on learning. All second graders will leave with a greater knowledge of STEM, informational writing, and a life skill that they will carry on with them for the rest of their lives.
