This list of items was put together after my second year of providing my urban students the opportunity to show livestock at the Wisconsin State Fair. Showing livestock is an amazing opportunity for any youth as it provides you with lessons beyond actually showing. Some things my students learn during this process include: an understanding of an industry that is unfamiliar to them (many try out this opportunity never having seen a lamb before taking my animal science class), responsibility, time management, confidence, how to understand and work with many different personalities, patience, develop a strong work ethic, and begin to challenge themselves and each other to do better. At the end of this years show it became apparent to me that in order to continue this program I need to make things easier for myself and provide my students with a smoother experience by purchasing supplies. Almost all of these supplies will last for years. So even though I may only have 6-12 students showing per year items like the show box and hand cart will last a lifetime. We borrowed items and had many items in the barn aisle simply because we had no place to store them out of the way. The show box will provide a place to store all of our equipment giving the students a more organized and enjoyable experience. The hand cart will allow us to move a lot of items quickly and easily without making many trips. The chairs so the students can enjoy their animals and time at the fair and in the barn. The clean up equipment to keep the barn area clean while they are showing, many of these items are so simple, but by having them, I will be able to provide an even better show experience.
