  • Basic Supplies for 4th Graders!

    Funded Sep 3, 2020

On behalf of my colleagues and myself, we sincerely thank you for your generous donations. With the ongoing pandemic, we have had to approach our jobs with creativity and grit. Moreover, we've had to work with limited resources including limited classroom supplies. Your donation has benefitted approximately 119 fourth graders in our school.

In September, our students were excited to start the year with pencil boxes/cases filled with necessary supplies, such as pencils, crayons, scissors, etc... As the year continues, we are gradually putting supplies to use in moderation. In particular, the crayons have come in handy as we have to implement more Art in the classroom, and also the student planners. With the inconsistency of a blended in-person/remote schedule, it can be challenging for young children to organize tasks. So having planners available for students has helped tremendously.

Lastly, due to unavailability of some supplies after our project was funded, we had a balance to spend, which I invested in a travel size document camera. While we have a school schedule laid out, there has been unexpected closures due to positive cases. As a result, having a document camera ready to be used at home has greatly impacted my remote teaching.”

  • Cursive Writing Matters!

    Funded Dec 2, 2018

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your donations towards our cursive writing workbooks! My students were so impressed with the capability of Donors Choose and what a difference our donors can make that they specifically requested I put together a project for cursive writing workbooks. They were ecstatic to learn that our project was funded, and even more ecstatic the day the workbooks arrived!

Throughout the past several weeks, my students have been perfecting their cursive writing and utilizing it in their everyday writing, which I encourage. It's amazing how fascinating cursive writing is for children these days, meanwhile we took advantage of it as children ourselves. It is a lost art that hopefully does not become extinct!”

  • Better Spelling, Bigger Vocabulary!

    Funded Aug 29, 2018

My students and I are beyond grateful for your generous donations that helped fund my first project in a matter of 48 hours! I believe having a class set of dictionaries and thesauruses is so important for children today, especially in our technology driven world. Children heavily rely on "electronic personal assistants" to answer simple and complex questions rather than taking the time to do some research themselves. So, besides being a source of spelling, definitions, and synonyms/antonyms, learning how to use a dictionary is a valuable lesson in itself.

In our classroom, my students have been utilizing their new dictionaries and thesauruses during their writing blocks. As fourth graders, we do a lot of independent writing. They have been using their new resources to look up more interesting words to revise their work, and they can independently edit their misspelled words. It has been taking some time since the books are so thick, but they truly are enjoying their new skill of looking up new words on their own! Moreover, we recently wrapped up a unit on poetry wherein students wrote several of their original poems. The thesauruses came in handy when revising to include more interesting and powerful words in their poems.

Again, we are truly uplifted by your generosity! As for me, it has been a gift to present my class with their class set of dictionaries and thesauruses so early in the school year! We got to put them to use right away during our writing workshops!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Khury

Having a class set of dictionaries and thesauruses will encourage my students to become more independent writers. Rather than depending on an adult to spell difficult words for them, they will have access to an abundance of words, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms all in one reference book! Writing can be a struggle for many students, but by having dictionaries and thesauruses available to them, they will be able to hone their spelling, build their vocabulary, and make better word choices in their writing! In addition, my students will learn how to use such a simple, yet powerful resourceful, something that is often forgotten in today's technology driven world.
