  • Hands-On Math Means Hands-On Fun!

    Funded Nov 12, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donations to my project! Every new material sparks engagement in students and hands-on learning is something that works for most first graders. My students will enjoy math more with the new manipulatives and games to use during our math block.

My students started surrounding my desk when the boxes came in and I began unpacking the new games and materials for math. They were especially excited when they saw the new counters for Counting Collections and Pop Games for addition. The Pop games will be great for differentiation because they are through 12, 20, and 30. Even students who normally cannot add to 20 and 30 will have a new game to support their learning.

I had them explore all the new materials. They immediately began playing with the farm and animal counters. They sorted the jewels and translucent bugs and counted them. They played the adding games and I enjoyed watching them take turns and not argue over who goes next and who touches what. The number line was put together by a few students who used adding on as a strategy to find the order in which I would hang it.

My favorite moments so far has been the engagement students have using the translucent counters, dice, and gems at my small group table. Something about those shiney new counters gets the students excited to count. Moving forward we will continue to use these games and counters during our math stations and apply our skills to formative and summative assessments. Math block just got a lot more fun!”

  • Let's Sit Together and Learn Together!

    Funded Aug 19, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donations! This project was perfect to kick off the new school year. The kiddos had to sit on the solid floor for a couple of weeks so it was very uncomfortable when we met as a whole group. We also do not have a map hanging on the wall to show them the world. These educational rugs met these needs entirely and the students love them!

Each day since the first day of school I would say "let's go to the carpet" which meant we were going to the floor to have whole group instruction. They laughed because there was no carpet. I explained that I had a project to get us new carpets for the floors that would add to the room's design and make it more comfortable for them. They were so pumped when I told them that my project was funded and they were getting a place to sit! When the carpets actually came in, they were cheering and jumping up and down like it was Christmas. I guess two weeks on a solid floor was long enough.

Now that the students have 3 bright and comfortable areas to sit on the floor, whole group instruction is not so bad for them (they will always wiggle after 5 minutes.) They look at the maps and talk about the continents and where we live. Now that they know Eric Carle, they are recognizing his animals on the carpet. I even catch them singing the ABC's on the little rug by the books and even though they are first graders, they are never too big to enjoy singing and learning. When they write they have been making their way to the new rugs and laying down to get comfortable. These educational rugs have definitely added a LOT to my little classroom and the learning environment for these kiddos.”

  • Little Listeners Make Big Readers!

    Funded Apr 14, 2020

Unfortunately this project was received after schools were closed due to COVID-19 so the original class this was purchased for was not able to benefit from it.

This year there is a new Kindergarten class that are learning how to rotate between literacy centers and listen to reading. They absolutely love sitting and following along with the Dr. Seuss books and CDs as well as other audio books I have available. They are excited to have me change them out each week so they can hear something new.

Listening to reading helps children build fluency, vocabulary, and develop a love for reading. This new center will be used daily to help these students with those goals. Thank you very much for your generosity during these hard times.”

  • Authors and Illustrators of Tomorrow’s Best Sellers!

    Funded Feb 26, 2020

Thank you so much for contributing to our new writing center! The students were very excited when the boxes of materials began to arrive and I stacked them in our new writing corner. I waited until we had time to open everything together and talk about our new writing tools.

The new desktop writing organizer was the first thing I unpacked. We did not have good organization for paper and writing supplies so the couple of artists I had were jumping with joy. As I pulled out coloring pencils and placed them in their holders with new writing paper the students were already to begin without seeing what else we had. When I pulled out the foam paint, students who normally do not get excited about writing and illustrating immediately perked up (who doesn't love paint?!)

After going over the procedures of taking care of our new materials we immediately incorporated the center into our literacy rotations. For days all I heard from students was "when are we going to writing?" While in the center all students were engaged, laughing, sharing each others art work and writing, and turning in their hard work to me. Every child in my room used the new center on a daily basis.

Unfortunately because of Covid-19 our time in class and the writing center was cut short. We did not get to use the center all year as anticipated and it saddens me because this class truly enjoyed it and deserved it. Next year I intend to put the writing center together and inspire my new set of students to begin the year as illustrators and use pictures and colors to share their thoughts and feelings to me and their classmates. These new writing tools will be used and appreciated for many years to come!”

  • Charting to Success!

    Funded Dec 9, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donations to help bring engaging materials to our classroom. The new anchor-chart center is a SMASH hit and the students cannot wait to use it every day. On both sides of the rack are two centers for the students. On one side, they can sort picture cards into alphabet pockets and create sentences. On the other side they can change around the calendar and act like meteorologists. The number chart above the center is used daily in math to help us count. That corner has become the favorite spot for their literacy and math centers. It is so much fun to watch them play 'teacher' and enjoy doing something that is supporting their learning.

When we received the materials the students freaked out. I explained that loving and giving people wanted to make sure they had something fun to learn with. Of course it took a day or two to open the whole thing and put it together and the whole time they were bugging me about it.

Since we have received our new charts and stand, the students have become independent with changing around the calendar, discussing the calendar, counting, and sorting letters and sounds. This was a great addition for our classroom and it is used everyday. In the future I plan to get more charts to change it up for them when they use it for so long. That is my goal for next year.

Thank you again for making sure learning in my classroom is fun and engaging!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Van Scoyoc
