My wish for all of my students is that they feel accepted, respected, and loved. In turn, one of the most important things that they can learn is to be accepting, respectful, and loving towards others.
"Building positive identities and a respect for differences means weaving diversity into the fabric of children's everyday lives." - Early Childhood Today.
As an educator, this is a priority for me. I make a conscious effort to plan character education with themes of kindness, compassion, caring, empathy, acceptance, and respect, as well as look for materials that allow each child to see his or her own culture, as well as others, represented.
The literature I chose for this project will help foster a sense of self-love within my students, and allow them to see people who seem just like them, as well as people who are different. The books will guide students in understanding that while there are many differences among us, there are just as many things we have in common. While benefiting from diversity reflected in our classroom library, I wish for students to always have tools available to depict themselves and others with, so I included People Color Crayons in the project. Last, the blocks center is a favorite in our classroom. While students practice communication skills and role playing to make sense of the real world, it feels essential that the toys they use represent the diversity of the real world. The Block Play People Complete Set includes families of five different ethnicities, and the Differing Abilities, Community, and Kids Around the World sets will all enrich this active learning-through play experience for my students.
With the help of this project, I hope to continue teaching my students to celebrate and value diversity with pride and open-mindedness!
Many thanks!
