I teach at a citywide high school in Baltimore City - when students start 9th grade, many of them have never been exposed to a foreign language before. After four years at my school, students take the International Baccalaureate examinations, competing against students who have been taking Spanish their entire lives. While my students express some interest in learning the language, they struggle to see its direct relevance in their lives. Some students have access to technology at home and can therefore watch videos and listen to songs in the target language in their free time; others, however, do not have such ready access to technology and rely on me to provide them a window into the Spanish-speaking world. Having a laptop that students can use in the classroom will allow them to directly access authentic materials - videos, newspapers, songs, etc. - in the target language, in the classroom.
