  • Chromebooks: Helping My Young Scientists to Shape the Future.

    Funded Oct 30, 2017

This is a sincere thank you for investing in my students at Githens Middle School. We now have 6 Chromebooks that belong to our classroom and are available any time we wish to use them. My classes are very large (30+) and very diverse and any method I can employ to reach all learners is welcomed. My English language learners are able to use the Chromebooks so that they can view the content visually and/or in their own language at the same time as the rest of the class resulting in more confident and motivated students. I also have several students without internet access at home. These students are able to utilize the Chromebooks if needed to check grades, check homework websites, and manage their Google accounts.

I teach a Science Enrichment Class every day to students that are above grade level. 6th grade science has partnered with NCSU in a research study to examine the effectiveness of a new computer program for coding that is engaging as well as effective for student learning of scientific concepts. Having extra Chromebooks is allowing the students to experience the progam individually without having to share computers during this time. It is exciting to see my students learning computational science content in such a different , engaging manner.

We recently used the Chromebooks to do our first Escape Room activity. The level of excitement in the room was off the charts. Students had to solve task card questions to break out of a digital escape room and then complete several review activities to crack the code on a locked suitcase which held their handsome reward! It was a very effective and engaging review which we will definitely be able to do for other Units now that we have technology that belongs in our classroom. I am also able to assign online tutorials during class so that students can practice their own note taking . These can be leveled to ability which works for all learners in the classroom.

Thank you again for your donation. It means the world to my students and I . You are helping to make a difference in the learning of so many students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Parker

  • Chromebooks: Helping My Young Scientists to Shape the Future.

    Funded Sep 8, 2017

Firstly, thank you from the 6th grade science classes at Githens Middle School. You have no idea how your generosity has impacted my classroom so far. Just to have three Chromebooks that STAY in my classroom has allowed students with little to no english language skills to watch related content in their language at the same time as the rest of the class. This has enabled them to better understand and grasp the vocabulary while keeping them on pace with their peers. I see much less frustration and much happier students that don't feel so left behind.

I like to set my classroom up as often as I can in learning stations that allows students of all levels to explore the content in a variety of ways. Having Chromebooks that STAY in the classroom is allowing me to add a station that utilizes technology. We were able to explore Earth's motion in great detail by running a simulation exploring the seasons and how the positions of the Earth, Sun and Moon as well as other factors contribute to these predictable patterns. It was awesome to see more advanced students being able to independently manipulate the simulations to represent different scenarios as well as lower level students that don't read well be able to visually grasp the content. I can't wait to set up stations for each Unit utilizing the Chromebooks. It has also been great to be able to say to students, "Go, look it up" and then have them share out with the class.

Having technology in the classroom is so important and exciting for all students but in particular for those that have no access at home which is a large majority of my kids. The classroom is where they are exposed to the skills and tools necessary for the 21st century and the classroom needs to have those resources available. Thank you again for your donation, you are impacting the success of so many students here at Githens!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Parker

My 6th grade students are eager to engage in hands-on science activities, and are desperate to use technology. Most of them come from homes where technology is not a part of their daily lives. I utilize the resources that I have available, but our school just cannot support funding technology in a way that enables my students to become functional 21st century learners. When I incorporate the few chromebooks that the school has into my science class, the students thrive. They use them in stations, do their own research, web quests, take quizzes, and participate in whole class activities. I have a very diverse population, and my newcomers and ESL students benefit greatly from using the chromebooks. Additionally, we are hoping to work with NC State university students who will come to my classroom to teach coding and applying scientific principles at the same time, but we need the chromebooks in place first.
