By creating and maintaining a classroom garden, my students can research and implement a real life, hands on experience, incorporating math, science, social skills and community building into one lesson. The soil and composter that I have requested will be used to teach about composting, the importance of helping the environment, and about working together as a team. The soils will be used to fill the garden box they constructed and allow us to grow vegetables which we will use to cook and share with our classroom community. The composter will allow us to learn about organically enriching the soil and importance of good nutrition not just fro people but plants too. These items will help me answer the question my students are constantly asking me about why they need to learn this and how do all these things effect me in real life. They will get to see first hand why science , math, heath and nutrition as well as interpersonal skills are relevant in their lives. My students learn in a nontraditional manner. Most of them will not go on to college. It is important for me to engage them in hands on real life projects that will still teach the important academic concepts. I enjoy seeing them work together to problem solve and engage in solving a problem that if presented in an academic manner they would never attempt. Having a garden allows them to be successful in an activity that develops math, science, community building and communication skills. T
