When asked, many students replied that they work best when working on the floor, a yoga ball, kneeling, or standing; especially while working with manipulatives or while writing. I have given my students the choice to work on the floor or stand during independent practice and group work, but I would love to have some options available to allow for more comfort as well as continuing to work in their groups. Wobble Chairs will provide students with a less distracting outlet for their wiggles, better posture, and more focus.
Learning in our classroom is built around structures that promote collaboration, and while my students strive when they work together, there are also times when they must work independently and engage for periods of time during direct instruction. The Wobble Chairs, Comfy Chairs, and Bean Bags will allow my students to sit in areas with other students who choose a similar option, giving them the opportunity to form groups and partnerships during collaborative activities, but also work by themselves when appropriate. Right now, I have a hodgepodge of items that my students use for flexible seating, but if I have groups of similar items, I will be able to be more intentional about how I set up my classroom.
This year, my students have really learned to love reading. They know how to choose books that are a good fit for them, and they have built stamina to sustain independent reading and writing. Flexible seating has promoted this growth in literacy for my students. I also feel that having multiple options for flexible seating will allow me to continue to foster the environment we have created, but also allow students to choose their best "area for learning" in the classroom while meeting many of their physical, social, and emotional needs.
