  • Journaling for Health

    Funded Jul 17, 2020

Thank you so much for contributing journals and writing pens to my students. They enjoy writing/drawing daily especially with the colorful pens. I can tell that they take pride in their work. Their entries are heartfelt and telling. Many of the students have shared with me that they want to continue journaling throughout their lives because of this classroom experience. Of course, these sentiments touch me deeply. It is well researched that writing helps to process emotions; the pandemic has caused much stress and anxiety that needs to be resolved and then put away to make room for education. Thanks for the positive impact that you've made!”

  • Healthy Lives Matter

    Funded Jul 13, 2020

The pandemic has created unique circumstances in all areas of our lives, education included. Differentiation in teaching has never been more important than it is now. I have been using books to help bridge the gap left by CoVid. In addition to daily journaling which has been extremely helpful for the students to process their emotions, they have also been reading independently and then sharing in book groups. The students are having productive and meaningful discussions about topics which they have in common. The books have sparked numerous class discussions which have been helpful towards creating an inviting and welcoming class environment.”

  • Classroom Yoga

    Funded Nov 23, 2020

Thank you so much for supporting my students and me! We have been practicing yoga since school started in August. We've been sharing mats, but now everyone will have their own mats to use. The students are noticing the benefits of yoga and are beginning to embrace the practice. Thanks again!”

  • Daily Meditations to Motivate Journaling

    Funded Nov 20, 2020

Thanks so much for your generosity. My students enjoy the daily meditation readings which are used for journal entry prompts each day. They are learning the power of positive thinking which is so important in their lives especially now. Journaling is a coping tool they can use throughout their lives.”

  • Tackling Tough Topics with Teens

    Funded Oct 4, 2019

Many of my students claim that they do not enjoy reading books. However, after being introduced to modern literature with teen topics that are relevant to their lives, most end up realizing that they do, indeed, enjoy reading.

I start my unit in health literature by showing them all the books from which to choose. Then each student chooses a book to browse and share with the class. From there, students are able to decide what book interests them most. I have multiple copies of books so students may choose to read in groups and work together on their culminating project. Using books has brought much excitement, interest and conversations to my Health classes. Thank you!”

  • Inspiration and Guidance for Seniors

    Funded May 19, 2020

Thank you so much for contributing to my project to provide my seniors with goody bags. Each gift bag contained journals, candy, gum, journals and an inspirational book with valuable advice on how to navigate the future after high school. Some of the boys who LOVE basketball were given the book, Mamba Mentality by Kobe Bryant. We drove around to houses and apartments delivering the gift bags. The joy and excitement on their faces was priceless!! Everyone was so happy to see us and their appreciation was obvious. We met many parents who were so grateful that their child was being recognized in such a personal and special way. Thank you so much for helping to cheer up some seniors during this difficult time.”

  • Celebrating Seniors

    Funded May 14, 2020

Thank you so much for contributing to my project, "Celebrating Seniors." You helped cheer up A LOT of students!! We drove door to door delivering goody bags on June 4. The joy on everyone's faces was priceless! The students felt special and the parents felt proud to have their children honored in such a meaningful and personal way. Each colorful bag contained a book, a journal, a key chain, gum and candy.

Here's one student's note of thanks: Mrs. Alicea, thank you so much for the surprise. I love it and I very much appreciate the fact that you and your husband have taken the time to give this present💕 It is something that is valued in the midst of everything that is happening, that a teacher make this gesture for the students. God bless you so much.”

  • There's No Fighting in Football

    Funded Dec 31, 2019

Thank you so much for donating towards the football equipment. My students absolutely love playing flag football and other cooperative games involving footballs. There's something about a football that makes everything more exciting to them! From my most talented athletes who play on the varsity team to my special needs students, they all love football and the smiles are in abundance as they play together!!

One of my favorite memories comes from Brianna who is in my TLC class (transitional learning.) She eagerly approaches me EVERY day asking if we're going to play football. Then she tells me about how she is going to "throw a bullet" pass! She goes on and on to everyone's delight about how she throws great spirals and "bullets." Her enthusiasm is contagious.

We often go outside on the football field to play. The students love catching passes and then running into the end zone to celebrate in their own unique ways just like the NFL players on tv. You have brought great joy to my students! Thank you!”

  • Traveling the Gravel Road to Great Health

    Funded Sep 11, 2019

On the very first day of having the books in my classroom I had a student approach me full of excitement asking if she could bring the book home with her to read. I was happy to let her know that she absolutely could bring the book home and any of the other books after that!

My students are enjoying having a classroom library. On the first day, each student picked a book they liked just based on the cover to give a quick review to the entire class. This activity generated a lot of excitement to begin reading and discussing a variety of themes.”

  • Living Healthy Despite Socioeconomic Factors

    Funded Jul 16, 2019

Thank you so much for contributing to our classroom library. We are excited to learn more about ourselves, how to cope with difficult situations and how we fit into society through reading. Books by Laurie Halse Anderson broach sensitive topics such as sexual assault (Speak) and eating disorders (Winter Girls). Discussing these books will help students by letting them know that they are not alone in their journey and also give them ways to cope.

We will read books together as a class and discuss them in our talking circles. Students will also read books in pairs and then present together to the class.”
