The students that will benefit from the proposed headphones are enrolled in a reading intervention program and will only be able to fully participate in the program if they have access to headphones, which many currently do not.
With your donation, our students will no longer have to wait until it is their turn to use one of the classroom's taped-together, static-plagued, deteriorating headphones.
By providing our students consistent access to quality headphones, they will maintain a regular instructional routine, aiding in their ability to focus and self-regulate. Students will engage with the computer software’s audio elements to learn new reading strategies, listen to model read-alouds, and learn to decode complex vocabulary.
Why now? In the 2018-2019 school year, our district is completely reinventing our intervention program and philosophy. We have adopted the Read 180 and System 44 intervention programs which promise to foster significant reading gains. My colleagues and I will work with students in small group rotations where they will receive targeted, personalized reading instruction. Students will be provided with headphones that support their individual learning styles as they rotate to the three stations within the classroom: small group instruction, independent reading, and computer software. Headphones will be essential in participating in the software activities as well as helping out with independent reading as audiobooks are provided as part of our independent reading library.
In an effort to revitalize the relationship our students have with reading, we plan to account for their listening needs in addition to their academic needs. With our new headphones, ALL students will feel supported, creating an opportunity for them to learn challenging, new words and participate fully in the reading stations and software.
