My students are mostly comprised of students from Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. They are the true definition of a team, walking to classes and throughout the hallways of our school together as a group. Our boys’ soccer team is known throughout our school as the closest group of any team, consistently helping each other with their academics, and practicing together after school. They speak numerous languages and constantly joke around with each other when they try teaching each other their native language. Our school is considered a small school in the south Bronx. We share the building with another high school, limiting our space and resources (such as the sharing gym space). We have stellar, dedicated groups of teachers that volunteer and facilitate after school programs. Although our funding is limited, we try to provide our students with as many extra-curricular activities outside the classroom.
