My first grade students began their formal school during an unprecedented pandemic. More than half of my students learned remotely from home in Kindergarten and this year is their first experience in a school setting. Prior to the pandemic, my classroom was full of different learning areas with pillows, carpets, and flexible seating options to allow students the movement they need developmentally to fully engage in their learning. This year, we are required to follow 3 feet of social distance between students. Student desks are spaced out in rows around the classroom, allowing for minimal movement throughout the school day. As you can imagine, it is difficult for 6 and 7 year olds to sit in a hard chair at a desk for 6 or more hours! Replacing their traditional chairs with flexible balance balls will allow students to move while they learn. It will also reduce the noisiness of metal chair legs scooting around on the tile floor which will help us all hear one another much better while learning with face masks. The colorful seating, the comfort, and movement will help my first graders find a good "balance" to learn in a developmentally appropriate way!
