Engaging Learners Through Literacy

Funded Aug 27, 2019

It is now well into the new school year and we are delighted to be using Scholastic News and Story Works each month. The students in our classroom look forward to reading the articles and discussing the current events with their peers as well as at home.

The fictional stories feature in Story Works has also added an exciting aspect to reading for some of our students. Reading longer fictional texts can be intimidating, especially for struggling readers. The concise stories allow students to explore a more complex text, either through read aloud or by listening to the story being read online, and apply grade level skills to eventually achieve mastery in grade level standards.

All of the academic success is wonderful, but honestly, we are most grateful for the love of reading that this has brought out in many of our students. They look forward to reading their scholastic and we typically have 100% homework completed when we assign an article or story from there. We couldn't be more grateful for the impact this has made on our students lives as readers and we will continue to foster their love for the written word each day.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Lehrer
