Our minority students come from various low income neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago. Our young people are surrounded by violence on an every day basis. They live it and breathe it. School is a safe haven for many of our students. It is place where they can learn, grow, gain skills, and self-esteem.
The 'Sleepover for Success' is just an extra part of our mission, which is an event used to provide our female students with opportunities to obtain knowledge and skills, build self-esteem, foster relationships, to feel empowered, and to encourage their growth in a safe, positive, and familiar environment.
Our female students often need to be reminded that they are smart, beautiful, creative, and strong young women. Many of them do not hear these words often. They do not know their worth. We want to build our girls up, encourage them and push them towards achieving their dreams. They really need us, and this type of positive experience that is being made available to them.
