Pen and Screen!
Funded Jan 28, 2022So much appreciation for this project. The classrooms that we all are teaching in and out students are currently learning in are lacking small things that make the process easier. The television in particular is going to dramatically improve our ability to teach and engage in our rooms each day.”

Help Us Collaborate And Stay Safe In Our Crowded Classrooms!
Funded Jan 25, 2022Thank you so much for supporting us! Particularly in this messy year. We appreciate you helping us to say safe, collaborative and creative. We're currently creating a series of historical graphic novel pages and are going to use the chart paper to blow them up large enough to share with the community! Thank you!”

A More Inclusive "World History" Course needs South African Resources
Funded May 5, 2020This is a much delayed note, because we were much delayed to getting back into the classroom, but that doesn't mean the gratitude is any less sincere! Thank you so much for supporting the growth of our World History course! We were not able to implement this last year, due to the pandemic, but we are so excited to end this current school year by having our student's engage in a lesson about South Africa and supplement it with the reading of "Born a Crime". We couldn't appreciate you more. Thank you so, so very much for your support!”

Funded Dec 31, 2019Hello everyone! I just wanted to update you as to how this project has ended up taking shape! We were so disappointed when because of the pandemic our trip to DC was cancelled. Especially after all of the hard work the kids did fundraising and the generosity of donors! While we obviously weren't able to reschedule the field trip, we HAVE been able to use the funds to do some pretty exciting things this year that have allowed our students to be more engaged with their history education! Over the course of this year we have been able to host a wide range of speakers and work with museums and institutions to bring virtual programming into TBLS to help break up some of the monotony of Zoom classes!
Among the experiences we've been able to offer students this year are a virtual field trip for all of our sophomores and juniors with the Museum of Chinese in America focusing on the "perpetual foreigner" stereotype in American history, a virtual field trip with The Eldridge Street Museum to think about the experience of Jewish individuals and immigrants on the Lower East Side, a session with the New York Historical Society focusing on the role of women in America in the early 20th century and historian talks from experts in Queer American History, Reconstruction and Civil Rights. We know that this isn't exactly what we were hoping for this year, but your donations last year have really helped us to enrich our experiences this year! Thank you so much!”

Funded Oct 17, 2019Thank you for donating these books to our growing classroom library. We gladly appreciate all your generous donation.
Within the classroom, I have taught lessons that has allowed my students to gain knowledge about slavery from various perspectives. With these books along with primary sources I have provided in class, the students have been able to get a well rounded perspective.
These books have been especially useful in providing my students with topic ideas for their historical investigations. The books have fostered their learning in topics such as about the Muslim religion which is topic that is not entirely covered in class.
One student has thoroughly enjoyed reading about women's role in Hitler's concentration camps. From the exposure to the book, she was inspired to pick a declamation piece about this topic from a former Jewish woman in Hitler's camp. She had also provided excellent insight about the woman's perspective during seminar.”

Funded Aug 13, 2019The literature that you donated aided immensely in the development of the type of learning we seek for our young learners to engage in. The invaluable Native American perspective you afforded to our classroom has not only enriched the development of blossoming young historians, but the understandings of my colleague and I.
The Native American story in this nation is pivotal as it pertains to the development of knowledge regarding the story that is American history. A fresh and integral perspective, entering the fold as a result of your generous donation, has allowed for more nuanced classroom discussion, and as a result, more fruitful learning. Students began to wholly redevelop the understanding they previously had on American history as a result of the resources you provided. In reading the texts you provided a perspective hardly considered was now at the forefront of classroom discussion.
Reading sections from literature such as "A Journey into Mohawk and Oneida Country, 1634-1635: The Journal of Harmen Meyndertsz Van Den Bogaert" was a highlight for many students this year. To be able to connect with Iroquis culture to the degree that this text allowed for was formative in the development of how these natives lived, as well as what was tainted by the increase in foreign presence. The thanks that I am offering right now can hardly capture the spark you ignited in the eyes of my students through your donations, but truly, thank you.”

Funded Aug 14, 2019Good health is vital to everybody, and especially so for students in great academic rigor here at Brooklyn Latin. Many enjoy breaks from their course work from time to time, often finding that rejoice in stickers awarded to them for doing particularly well on an assignment. The ones given by you have helped in promoting their healthy mentality.
Upon installing the resources you have also generously donated to the classrooms, they have been using it to keep the environment and themselves clean. Sanitizing their hands, using tissues when experiencing minor colds, and paper towels to clean up any spills. Recently a majority of my R4 (4th period) students had a minor case of sneezing in the class, upon which many sanitized their hands and kept a small stock of tissues to avoid frequent trips to the bathroom downstairs. Many may try to avoid these issues in favor of not having to buy and use them, but due to their immediate availability in the classroom, they are able to do so, to retain their good health and of their peers around them.”

Funded Apr 24, 2019Markers and paper and tape may not seem like the most exciting of classroom projects to donate to, but they make such a big difference in the way our day to day classroom runs! Because of your support my students were able to engage in their first "unessay." Rather than demonstrate their understanding in a standard written form, they used the same skills of historical description, analysis and interpretation, and created innovative projects like interactive website, 18th century papers and political cartoons. Thank you so much for support their learning. We appreciate you!”

"Boring Basics" Support Bright Young Historians!
Funded Dec 20, 2018I know it seems like no big deal, but "boring basics" are getting us through the year! When the kids opened the boxes one of them exclaimed "Exactly what we need!" with such sincerity!
We just finished up a unit on the Constitution and the kids did an "unessay" and engaged in some rigorous creative endeavors to demonstrate their understanding of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist debates over the Constitution. This project allowed them to create an array of projects like 18th century newspapers and political cartoons.
Thanks for supporting their learning and creativity! We appreciate you all, always!”

Funded May 23, 2018We've finally gotten around to taking out our Kindles for the first time, and what a treat it's been! While our classroom library is excellent, it is so nice to be able to search terms in our Kindles and to share multiple copies of a book. I was surprised by how much this led to deeper discussions, as it was easier for kids to look for common topics and ideas. Thank you so very much for your donations, it has made our classroom run smoother, the kids more engaged and their research deeper. We appreciate you!”
