I teach at a school in West Philadelphia in an area that is typically called "the bottom", so now every morning we say "Welcome to the Top". Many of our students come from difficult backgrounds. Some do not know when their next meal is over the weekend, or where they will be staying. They do not know when their clothes can be cleaned. Because our students are facing so many difficulties at home they do not come to school ready to learn. They are dealing with many social emotional issues that make it difficult to learn. Our students need a space where they can calm down and get back on track. Our students are resilient and amaze us everyday! We want to create a calm down space with an obstacle course that can engage their minds and bodies. This will help students center their minds so that they can rejoin the class, and continue to learn. I am requesting different clings for the floor and the wall to help create this hallway. It will be an obstacle course with a line on the floor or footprints to follow. I want to have clings on the wall to for the student to interact with. This is an awesome idea for students with social/emotional needs.
