We have 3, 60 gallon aquariums the students are tasked with designing and maintaining. They learn about water chemistry, and how temperature affects not only the fish, but the other elements of a coral reef. These supplies will aid in their maintenance of the aquariums, as well as adding a real life look to them. How do we affect the health of coral reefs on a daily basis? This is the question posed to my 6th graders. They research what a reef is, how it is formed and what events can affect the health of a reef. The feeders will help maintain healthy fish by providing the correct amount of food over weekend and school holidays. The air pumps will oxygenate the tanks, providing a healthier environment for the fish. In the event they lose control of the algae, the treatment will help them get it under control, after they have evaluated their efforts and determined what part of the ecosystem they let get out of balance.
