Writing is difficult for my ESL students, so I am focusing on writing this year. However, we still need books to spark an interest not only in reading, but also in writing. I have chosen a variety of books at different grade levels as I teach First Grade through 5th Grade. (Also, some of my upper level students are new to the country and are just learning the language and will use the lower reading level books.) Reading books and passages is imperative for learning to write better, read better, and improve language. Reading different genres helps students understand different ways to organize writing. They can use fiction we have read and use a similar format for their own writing. Students can look at the different ways nonfiction books are organized and organize their nonfiction writing according to the examples they see. Last year, my students read a variety of fables. Reading several fables was essential for them to understand the format of a fable to create their own. Some of my most reluctant writers wrote the best stories and had the most creative morals at the end of their fables! My students were confident and felt successful with their writing.
