My 8th grade art students enjoy studying art history...they are full of questions! They analyze paintings, sculptures, and objects of art and always ask, how and why. They are inquisitive about artists and their inspirations. I usually begin with the time period in history overlapping music, dance, and drama to allow them a "taste" of what the artists' environment/atmosphere was like. Our art classes are packed; I have over 110 students each day!! Our school is high poverty. When art teachers from other schools ask me, "how do you collect your art fees and how much do you charge the kids?" I tell them I can't collect art fees because most of the kids don't have the money. Our school is almost 90% free reduced lunch. Then they ask, "How do buy your supplies, do you buy supplies?" I say..."I write grants, and grants, and grant...". But there is a time when those grants aren't funded anymore because "we've had our share"and it's other schools' turn.
